Dental Disease Doesn’t Hurt…Until it Does!

Dental Disease Doesn't Hurt Unit it Does

“Why do I need to go to the Dentist if I brush and floss my teeth everyday?”

Q: I brush and floss my teeth every day meticulously, but I just went to the dentist for the first time in 5 years and they told me I had 6 cavities. How is that even possible? I thought I was doing a great job cleaning my teeth.

A:  Thank goodness you are doing what you can at home–kudos to you… but that’s not enough!  The plaque that is in your mouth can be really sticky and keeps accumulating on it’s self to make a thicker substance–Calculas (not the MATH).  This lays down an incredible inflammatory response in your mouth that can lead to an amazing amount of systemic diseases.

Q:  So you are telling me that if I don’t get my teeth professionally cleaned it can lead to other problems?

A:  Yes, inflammation is what we are constantly trying to control in our bodies.  In your mouth, which is in fact the Gateway to your whole body, you need to control the inflammation of periodontal disease.  Heart disease, diabetes, liver problems and arthritis are just a few of the systemic diseases that are proven to link to periodontal disease.

Q:  How do you determine which type of cleaning I need?

A:  At our Dr. Higham and Dr. Sauchelli, we provide you with evidence based dentistry.  We diagnose from what you present us with.  We use an instrument to measure the space between the top of your gum to the base of the pocket (a periodontal probe).  These measurements (which are 6 spots per tooth) should be 3 or less.  If they are more there is disease that needs to be irradicated.  Sometimes you just haven’t been to the Dentist in a while, that’s OK! Be proud of yourself that you are here now.  There are many ways that we can help you get back to HEALTH and it is an individual treatment plan. We don’t proceed until you understand what you will benefit from, the cost, the time commitment and how to prevent it from occurring again.

Q:  So what about the cavities?  They don’t hurt… Are they really there?

A:  That’s another great question.  The digital dental x-rays don’t lie!  The Doctors have spent a considerable amount of years diagnosing from their intraoral exam of your mouth and the radiographs that they prescribed (30+ years for Dr. Higham and Dr. Sauchelli).

Q:  But can’t I wait until they hurt?

A:  Yes, you can.  But, why would you?  If you take care of a cavity when it is first found it is usually smaller and will require less tooth structure to be removed to get to the bad decay that needs to be treated. Untreated decay grows and grows and grows…until the tooth breaks, hurts and requires a lot more treatment (and MONEY) to save the tooth, besides a simple filling!

Q:  What else do you do, so I know that I can trust what your plan is for my mouth?

A:  We listen to you!  We involve you in your treatment, from the beginning.  We show you what we are looking at on your digital x-rays and also on the photos that we take inside your mouth.
